Le Camelia, is a Maison d'Maitre built in the late 1890's by the Family St. Martin. Two minutes walk takes you into the town centre (no need to drive to the bars) yet leaving Le Camelia by the side gate two minutes walk brings you into the countryside (beautiful walking country). Although in the Hautes-Pyrénées it is no more than 10 minutes drive from the Gers with Marciac, famous for it's jazz festival or Madiran, famous for it's wine. Le Camelia has both self catering accommodation and B&B. We also offer a choice of half or full board and can provide food for picnics on request. There is a private lounge stocked with a large selection of english books and board games. For those hotter day's there is, a small above ground plunge pool, fishing from the bottom of the garden (trout) and we have ample space to relax in the gardens where you will find sun loungers and hammocks. And if you want to keep fit there is also a well equipped gym and yoga space. This year has seen the addition of raised vegetable beds where we grow our own organic vegetables and the renovation of the old wash house into the perfect spot to keep cool. Maubourguet also has it's own excellent outdoor swimming pool and is open throughout the school Summer holiday's.

THE CHOICE OF ACCOMMODATION

CHAMBRES D'HOTES:

Bordeaux: (Sleeps 2/3) Large (32sq. metre) magnificent south facing room with double bed and single and en-suite modern shower room. Original marble fire place and ceiling high double windows overlooking the front garden give this room a feeling of grandeur. There is an adjoining twin room with it's own stone balcony making this perfect for families.

Marciac: (sleeps 2) 20sq. metre twin bed room adjoining Chambre de Bordaux. This room has it's own large balcony perfect for enjoying a glass of wine on those balmy nights or sunbathing. *Note: there are no private shower or bathroom facilities for this room but there is a w.c. with hand basin on the landing outside the room. *This room should be booked with either Madiran or Bordeaux.

Madiran: (Sleeps 2) Good sized (25sq metre) double bedroom north facing with it's own Juliette balcony. Room looks out onto the walled garden and the architecturally interesting barn. Original white marbled open (working) fireplace gives the room an air of elegance. 100% cotton sheets and top quality mattress ensures a peaceful nights sleep. En-suite bathroom with bath and shower over.

These rooms are on our 2nd floor and share the use of a large, newly installed modern shower room with double handbasin unit. As with our luxury rooms, they all have good quality bed linen, towel bale per person, tea & coffee making facilities and the price includes a good breakfast.

Lilac: Lovely fresh twin room with shared bathroom. This room is a good size and has all the furniture you need including desk & chair, comfortable chairs, wardrobe etc.,.

Soleil: Beautiful large sunny south facing room with double bed, desk & chair, comfortable chairs, wardrobe etc., - shared bathroom.

Willow: Good sized bedroom with double bed, wardrobe, comfortable chair, desk & chair - shared bathroom.

The following is taken from "France This Way" - Maubourguet is a pretty market town situated south of the beautiful vineyards of Saint Mont and Madiran. Currently, a main road cuts through the quaint tree lined high street, which is soon to be bypassed.

There’s a strong feeling of colonial Englishness in the town most likely as it was fortified by the English in the 14th century but then devastated by the Protestants during the revolution 2 centuries later; however, it retains some quaint balconies and amazingly beautiful buildings. It’s not until you take the back streets of Maubourguet to explore its hidden gems and riversides that you truly appreciate its history. The one real relic of Maubourguet is the Church of Saint Martin built in the 11th Century It was a part of a Benedictine monastery and is on the pilgrimage route of Saint Jacques de Compostelle just off of the main market square... Updated over the centuries and converted for modern day use, it’s well worth a visit!

The town itself is a hive of activity with the weekly market every Tuesday morning. Being in Gascony, where food is of utmost importance there are a number of amazing stalls, many of whom offer you the opportunity to sample their produce before you buy! Cured saucisson, cheese and fois gras are sure to tempt the palate being the main products! Not forgetting the local wine of course. Maubourguet has a typical array of French shops, Gamm Vert the agricultural merchants – which also sell clogs, and French crafts, a major supermarket, patisseries, and more hairdressers than people in the high street. It’s well known for its bars and restaurants, and has a brilliant cave ( off license) opposite the bike shop (which sells every nut and bolt you could possibly need for a two wheeled vehicle, which are usually fixed on for a mere 2 Euros extra!! The town hall is s spectacular building, almost too big infact, it’s nestled down an alleyway and in handy reach of a chemist, tabac come Aladdin’s cave and computer shop

There’s a vast array of activities for all the family, Maubourguet itself is on the flat, and offers the less experienced of us the opportunity to try our hand at cycling, however, for the more enthusiastic, just 5 minutes ride away you can explore the rolling forests of Sombrun and Saint Mont.

In the foothills of the Pyrenees, this town offers the most amazing views of the mountains (on a good day), which are easily accessible by car, for skiing enthusiasts amongst us and with the Spanish border just an hour away it’s worth taking a trip down for lunch to explore the beautiful scenery of the Pyrenees and stock up on some shopping. The region has a strong equestrian influence, and there are many places to go trekking, whether it is through the forests by horse back or something a little different in the form of a camel trek alongside the river Adour. During the summer months the mountains are hosts to rock climbers, walkers and hikers and with many fine restaurants on the way up to the mountains, there’s time to indulge in some traditional French cuisine.

The town is cut by 2 main rivers and a stroll along these, or a spot of fishing offers a relaxing break from everyday life.

A must for the children is the Pyrenees national park, with the opportunity to play in fresh mountain streams and see animals native to the Pyrenees. There are a number of animal parks offering hours of entertainment, banana boats on the Adour, and a great outdoor pool.

For the best pain au chocolate in France, visit one of the two competing patisseries on the high street, why not buy one from each and decide for yourself! There are several bars and restaurants down the main high street, offering traditional French plat du jours.

Maubourguet is well served by camp sites and also has Montfort factory shop where you can buy reasonably priced pates and Duck related produce.

With so many activities ensure you’re not too exhausted to visit the local vineyards, famous for the wines of Madiran and St Mont, and also the famous local villages of Madiran, Marciac, Castelnau and Viella who are guaranteed to offer you a true French welcome.

Less than one hour from Pau airport, two hours from Toulouse or Bordeaux or just over two hours from Biaritz gives you a choice of routes by plane. Driving down from UK is possible within a day but it's a long drive so an overnight stop half way is always recommended. Travelling here by road: Nearest autoroute is A64 Bayonne - Toulouse (Info-route 0 825 065) Plan your route with Mappy.com By Train: Nearest main train station is Tarbes with direct connections to Paris (Information and reservations ****** 35) SNCF (French Railways) By Air:Airports: Biarritz (2 hrs), Toulouse (2 hrs), Bordeaux (2hrs), Pau (50 kms), and Tarbes-Lourdes (25 kms) Airlines: Ryanair, Easyjet, Air France, BA, and you can see an overview of them all at skyscanner. On your return home, you’ll be pleased (or may be not!) to know that all of the airports mentioned are well equipped with duty-free shopping, cafés, bars, newsagents, restaurants and boutique style shops. Hiring a car for your holiday (if travelling by plane) We recommend hiring a car for your stay as this will enable you to make the most of your holiday.
